DNC wraps up tonight; here’s a recap of the past week

The Democratic National Convention kicked off on Monday and here is a recap of first three nights:

Night 1:

  • Former presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, who gave Biden his full support on April 13th after withdrawing from the race himself, gave a speech and stated, “If Donald Trump is re-elected, all the progress we have made will be in jeopardy.”
  • Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, closed out the event and gave her emotional speech and stated;
    • “Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job but he is clearly in over his head.”
    • “Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership, consolation, or any symbolism of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy.”

Night 2:

  • Democrats have officially nominated 77-year-old, Joe Biden, as their Democratic presidential candidate.
  • Biden refers to himself as a “transitional figure,” for both the party and country.
  • Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, closed out the event with a speech focusing mostly on the coronavirus and schools.
  • One speaker after another made comments about Trump saying he is “uninterested in being a good president,” “woefully unprepared,” and “out of his depth.”
  • Two former Democratic presidents spoke on Night 2. Bill Clinton spoke, but his speech was a little less than 5 minutes compared to 2012 when he spoke for 48 minutes.  Jimmy Carter, accompanied by his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, also spoke.
  • U.S. Representative from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who once fully supported Bernie Sanders, also made an appearance.
  • New York Senator, Chuck Schumer, also gave a speech claiming that the president was “hiding in a bunker as Americans were tear-gassed” while rioting was taking place in Lafayette Square outside the White House.  Trump has disputed these claims.
Night 3:
  • 55-year-old California Senator, Kamala Harris made history by formally accepting her nomination as the first black woman of Asian decent on a major party national ticket.
  • The main theme from the Democrats on Night 3 was “Vote.” Almost every speaker made it a point to add in their speech something about getting out the vote for this election.
  • During former President Barack Obama’s speech, he questioned President Trump’s ability to carry on the job.
  • Typically, there is an unspoken rule where former presidents do not speak ill of the current president, but Obama pushed that rule out the window and speaking mostly on degrading Trump by saying:
    • “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t.”
    • “This administration has shown it will tear our democracy down if that’s what it takes to win.”
News Mississippi reached out to both the Republican and Democratic parties in Mississippi to get their reaction on the Democratic National Convention.
Lucien Smith, Chairman of the Mississippi GOP, said, “ Democrats have just formally nominated the most radically leftist ticket in American history – a ticket virtually devoid of any private sector experience and proud of it.  The Biden-Harris team would seek to further tax and regulate America’s private sector into a cold Marxist grave. Together, they will push to advance the abortion-on-demand, defund the police, and apologize to our enemies abroad. Extremism, that is the modern democratic party.”
We have not received a response from the Mississippi Democratic Party.
